How do you clean a silicone reconstitution mat?

By Keenan Johns, Founder of Protocol Ritual LLC · · 2 min read

A large prep pad wiping a black silicone mat

Wipe the mat with a large 70% isopropyl alcohol pad before you set anything on it, and again when you are done. Let the alcohol evaporate, a few seconds, then fold the mat and put it away. That is the whole routine, and it is why our prep-pad box includes 30 large mat-prep pads alongside the 60 skin-prep pads.

The routine, every dose

  1. Lay the mat flat on the counter.
  2. Wipe it with a large mat-prep pad (65 × 100 mm), edge to edge, in one direction. One pad covers the whole mat.
  3. Let it dry. Alcohol evaporates in seconds.
  4. Set out the dose: vial, syringe, opened skin-prep pad.
  5. When you are done, wipe the mat again with a fresh pad and let it dry.
  6. Fold it and put it back in its case.

Spills and residue

If something spills or the mat feels tacky, rinse it under warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, rub it with your fingers, rinse, and dry it with a clean towel or let it air-dry flat. Then wipe it with an alcohol pad before the next use.

Lint and dust

Silicone attracts lint and dust by static, especially on dark colors. The alcohol wipe lifts it. Storing the mat folded in its case, rather than loose on a counter, keeps most of it off.

What to avoid

  • Cutting or scoring on it. It is a work surface for setting things down, not a cutting board.
  • Abrasive scrubbers. They dull the surface. A pad or your fingers is enough.
  • Stickers or tape. The adhesive is harder to clean off than anything the mat is meant to hold.

How long it lasts

Silicone does not absorb alcohol and does not crease when folded. The founder's own mat has been used three or four times a week for six months and, wiped with a pad, looks the way it did the day it arrived.

Questions

What should I clean a silicone reconstitution mat with?

A 70% isopropyl alcohol pad, before the dose and again after. Use a large pad so one wipe covers the whole mat.

Can I wash it with soap and water?

For a spill or sticky residue, rinse with warm water and a little mild dish soap, dry it, then wipe with an alcohol pad before the next use.

Why does lint stick to it?

Silicone holds dust and lint by static. A wipe with an alcohol pad lifts it. Store the mat folded in its case rather than loose on a counter.
